History of Organization

The Bobby E. Wright Comprehensive Behavioral Health Center, Inc. (B.E.W.) was originally incorporated as the Garfield Park Comprehensive Community Mental Health Center, Inc. in 1973. By 1976 the Garfield Park Comprehensive Community Mental Health Center received a Department of Health, Education and Welfare grant to promote and strengthen the concept of community mental health services.

The Board of Directors appointed Dr. Bobby E. Wright as the first Executive Director of the agency. Under his leadership, the agency grew from one sheltered workshop program to eleven clinical programs. Following Dr. Wright's death in 1982, the agency was named the Bobby E. Wright Comprehensive Community Mental Health Center. The agency continues Dr. Bobby E. Wright’s philosophy of commitment, accountability and excellence of service to the community. .
